  13. hero, the very embodiment of integrity

  15. Westerns. As a newly married town
  16. marshal, he must balance an innate
  17. sense of justice and duty with loyalty
  18. to his beautiful new -- and pacifist
  19. -- bride when he is left by an
  20. ungrateful town to face a gang of
  21. deadly outlaws alone.

  24. is real time as the showdown grows
  25. ever closer. A masterpiece. Frequently
  26. interpreted as a parable about artists
  27. left to "stand alone" and face
  28. persecution during the (United States
  29. Congress) House Un-American
  30. Activities Committee Hollywood
  31. blacklisting.

  34. un-American. He was apparently
  35. offended by the ending of the film,
  36. which shows Sheriff Kane removing his
  37. badge and tossing it in the dirt. (And
  38. we wonder why boys who are not
  39. "masculine" enough become psychiatric
  40. basket cases!)
